ABSTRACT
This thesis is an exploratory study on the modes and characteristics of identity
construction in blog texts.
In accordance with our requirements concerning the appropriate blog in quality,
quantity and content, we choose the blog titled “天使的翅膀 (Angels wings)” from the
website, http://blog.sina.com.cn. All texts in the blog dating from the very launch till
March 6th, 2010 are collected and constitute the corpus for the study. A statistical
analysis finds that there are 190 pieces of texts, 52.4% of which are narratives.
The analysis work has been carried out from two distinct aspects, that is, the
structures of narrative, and the communication between the blogger and blog readers.
Firstly, we investigate identity construction work in the three narrative components,
namely, complicating action, evaluations and resolution. With the help of Membership
Categorization Analysis (MCA), it is found that in complicating action, the blogger has
his identity constructed through a description of the relevant attributes and activities of a
particular category. When it comes to identity construction in evaluations, the blogger
accomplishes self-positioning by firstly positioning the characters narrated in blog texts
and then expressing his affiliations to or disaffiliations from the narrated characters.
Affiliations towards the positioned characters would construct the same or similar
identity for the blogger, whereas disaffiliations would at least distance the blogger from
identities offered to the narrated characters. Affiliations or disaffiliations are realized
through particular words and sentence structures. For instance, pronouns like
wo,men”(我们), adverbs like “dou” (), and other words that directly indicate likeness,
are employed to identify the blogger with the narrated characters; words that suggest
otherness, compound sentences that indicate a transitionand adverbial clauses of time
like “…de shihouzhengzai…” (……的时候,……正在……) all provide a contrast
and demonstrate the bloggers disaffiliations from the narrated characters. When
analyzing identities in resolution, we avail ourselves of performativity theory and find
that the blogger often expresses his will or resolutions through such structures as wo
yao” (我要), “wo hui” () or “wo jiang” (). By making such claims, the blogger
is actually making an announcement or even a promise, thus identity is constructed by
such actions performed by the blogger.
Communication between the blogger and his blog readers is embodied in the

constant blog writing and response making. Based on a performative understanding of
their communication, our studies find that the blogger and his blog readers have their
identities constructed respectively as a hospitable blog host and regular blog visitors
through the long-term interactions.
The analysis is concluded with a panorama of the bloggers identity and a
summary of characteristics of identity construction in the selected blog. The panorama
is presented from sexuality, workplace identity, family identity and others. Identity
construction in this blog is continuous, variable and unilateral. Also in the interactive
process, the blogger feels freer to exercise his subjectivity in constructing identity than
in real-life interactions.

本文就博客语篇中身份构建的方式及特点进行了探讨性的研究。
依据质、量以及内容三方面的要求,我们从新浪网(http://blog.sina.com.cn)选取
了一个标题为“天使的翅膀”的博客。该博客中从博主开博时起到 2010 36
日的所有文本被选作为本研究的语料库。统计显示该语料库共包190 篇博客文
章,其中叙述语篇占 52.4%
本研究从叙事结构、博主与博客访问者间的互动交流两方面出发,对该语篇
中的身份构建进行了研究。首先,我们依据拉波夫叙事结构,对叙事三个部分“进
展”“评价”及结局”进行分别的研究。通过员类属分析,们发现“
展”中的身份构建是通过对某一特定类属的相关特征及其特有活动的描述来实现
的。而在“评价”中,博主首先对他人进行定位,然后通过表达对于他人身份的
认同或不认同来对自身进行定位。对他人身份的认同可以为博主构建同样的或类
似的身份,而博主的不认同则否定了这一可能性。此外,这种认同或不认同是通
过一定的词汇及句子结构来实现的。例如,代词“我们”副词“都”以及其它一
些表达相似性的词汇都可以用来显示作者的认同;而一些强调差异性的词汇,一
些表示转关系的并句,及如……的时……正在……的时间从
是用来彰显博主和被叙述对象间的差距。在分析“结局”中的身份构建时,我们
使用了展演论。这种表达意愿、决心的结构经常出现在“结局”中,“我要……
“我会……或“我将……。而博主正是通过这种宣告甚至是承诺的展演来建构
自己身份的。
博主和博客访问者之间的互动交流体现在博客文章及其回复的不断添加、更
新的过程中。我们把这种互动交流理解为行为的展演。通过双方长期的交流, 博
主和博客访问者为各自分别建构了“一个诚挚友好的博主”以及“访问该博客的
常客”的身份。
基于如上的分析,本文对博主的身份进行了多方面的构建,包括性向身份、
工作身份、家庭身份等。与此同时,我们还对该博客语篇中身份构建的特点进行
了概括总结。该博客语篇中的身份构建体现了其连续性、可变性,并且更侧重于
博主单方面的身份构建。此外,较之现实交际,在博客语境下,博主可以更为自
主地构建自己的身份。

Chapter One Introduction
§1.1 Background and General Purposes of the Study
In recent times, it has become a common practice for netizens to maintain their
own weblogs. According to the Sweden IT company Pindom, there were about 1260
million bloggers throughout the world by the end of 2009. The popularization of
blogging has made it the subject of many disciplines, especially that of linguistics. In
spite of its being a relatively new communication mode emerging from the fast-growing
Internet technology, it could never disavow the important role that language plays in
realizing communication.
Identity research is another flourishing field among social sciences. The sweeping
influences of constructionism have instilled refreshing ideas and means into identity
studies. Under this theoretical background, identity is framed as actively, continuously
and dynamically being constructed and negotiated in discourse. The predominant
position invested in discourse makes sociolinguistics the very frontier of identity studies.
In addition to those traditional approaches such as Conversation Analysis (CA), some
new discursive theories and approaches have been developed for studying the identity
construction work, such as Discursive Psychology (DP) and Positioning Theory (PT).
With the aid of these analytical methods, identity studies are developing more rapidly
than ever before.
Considering the above two trends, it is little wonder that this thesis devotes itself
to a study of identity construction in blog texts. Through the exemplar study of a
Chinese blog, this thesis will answer the following questions and hopefully contribute
to the identity studies as a whole:
(1) How does identity get invoked and constructed in the selected blog? And what
are the linguistic forms employed to realize the construction of identity?
(2) What identity has been constructed respectively for the writer and readers of
the selected blog?
(3) What are the characteristics of identity construction reflected in the selected
blog?
